Brand Strategy

Most local businesses don’t have a logo problem. They have a clarity problem.

If a customer can’t tell in five seconds what you do, who you do it for, and why they should pick you over the shop three miles down the road, no amount of posting or advertising fixes it. It just spreads the confusion further.

This shows up in ways that look like other problems. Quotes get compared on price alone, because nothing else about you stands out. Referrals describe you differently than you describe yourself. Your website says “full-service” and your best customers actually hire you for one specific thing. Social posts get written from scratch every time because there’s no agreed message to draw from.

Brand strategy is the work of settling those questions once, in writing, so that every decision after it gets faster and more consistent. It is the least glamorous service we offer and the one that makes the other three work.

Who this is for

Opening soon

You’re launching and every choice ahead of you — name, signage, site, pricing — depends on decisions you haven’t made yet.

Outgrown the old story

The business has changed since you started, but the message, the site, and the photos are still describing the version of you from five years ago.

Blending in

You do better work than your competitors and your marketing sounds exactly like theirs. Every conversation turns into a price conversation.

What we work out together

Everything below is written down and handed to you in plain language. The test we hold it to: someone you hire next year should be able to read it and market your business correctly without asking you a single question.

  • Positioning. One sentence on what you do, for whom, and what makes you the better choice — specific enough that a competitor couldn’t copy-paste it onto their own site.
  • Your best-fit customer. Not a demographic sketch. The actual kind of job, household, or business you should be chasing, and the kind you should politely pass on.
  • A messaging framework. Your core promise, the two or three proofs that back it up, and prepared answers to the objections you hear every week.
  • Brand voice. How you sound — with real before-and-after examples from your own copy, not adjectives like “friendly yet professional.”
  • Visual direction. Logo usage, colors, type, and the kind of photography that fits. If you need a designer, we set the direction and brief them so you’re not paying for exploratory rounds.
  • Tagline and naming support where it’s genuinely needed — for a new location, a new service line, or a name that’s working against you.
  • A one-page brand summary. The whole thing on a single page, because a fifty-page document nobody opens has changed nothing.

How the engagement works

The same three phases we use on every engagement, applied to your brand.

01

Discover

We go through your current materials, talk to you about the customers you actually enjoy serving, and look at how the businesses you compete with present themselves.

02

Build

We draft the positioning and messaging, bring it back for a candid reaction, and revise. You are in this part — a brand handed to you without your fingerprints on it never gets used.

03

Grow

We put it to work: site copy, Google Business Profile, social bios, signage, the way you answer the phone. Consistency is where the value actually shows up.

Common questions

Isn’t a brand just a logo?

A logo is one output of a brand, not the brand itself. Your brand is the answer a customer gives when a neighbor asks about you. Brand strategy work decides what that answer should be, and the logo, colors, and words are built to support it.

We’re a two-person business. Is this overkill?

No — small businesses feel unclear positioning faster than large ones, because every quote, post, and conversation comes out of the same two people. The engagement is scaled to the business: a two-person shop gets a focused set of decisions it can actually use, not a corporate brand book.

Do we have to change our name or logo?

Usually not. Most of the time the name and mark are fine and the problem is the message wrapped around them. If a change genuinely is the right call, we say so and explain why — we don’t recommend a rebrand to create work.

How long does it take?

It’s measured in weeks rather than months. The variable is how much discovery is needed — how many customer conversations, how much competitive review, and how quickly decisions get made on your side.

What this connects to

Brand strategy is the input to everything else. Once the message is settled, local SEO makes sure the right people find it, social media keeps it in front of them, and content gives them a reason to keep paying attention. You can start here or start anywhere — but if the message isn’t clear yet, this is the cheapest place to fix it, and it’s what any AI tooling we set up later will be told to sound like.
